Treadmill desk

Nick decided he needed some exercise.

His job, like many, requires him to be in front of his laptop.  He wanted to work and get exercise at the same time.  The ultimate multi-tasker.  What better way than with a treadmill desk!  Too bad a TrekDesk will set you back $479, and that doesn’t even include the treadmill!

sent me an email and I quickly responded with something I’d seen on IKEA Hacker awhile ago.  They turned a {currently discontinued} desk into a treadmill desk!  A-Mazing!

A treadmill was acquired for around $120 – remember the post about carrying a treadmill upstairs?  Then Nick found the discontinued desk in the city!  The Jerker Desk.  It’s very sturdy for IKEA furniture.  Maybe that’s why they discontinued it (I jest, I actually love IKEA).

Then it was time for my 2 degrees and 5 years working as a mechanical engineer to come in handy.  What did I do?  I drew a rectangle.  Yep.  No seriously.  That’s all I did.  To be fair, there was a lot of measuring and line drawing that went on.  But when it comes right down to it, I drew a rectangle.  Considering this is probably the 2nd home project where I felt like I was “using” my degree, it really hasn’t paid off yet.

We “measured twice, and cut once” but would have been fine measuring once.

The hardest part was the cutting.  Not sure if you follow Nick’s blog, but he once posted about his “handyman” projects around the house.  Good thing we’ve got friends that are WAY more handy than us!

We headed over to Simon and Karen’s to cut our rectangle.  I cut the starter hole and then helped Karen hang Christmas lights while Nick finished.  First, he jigsawed a rough rectangle.

Then, with Simon’s help, they used a router to make it look nice and smooth (Simon actually did half of it, but my pictures happen to be of Nick).

Simon and Karen are currently working on a pergola for their backyard….Nick and I are still learning to cut rectangles.  Babysteps.

We got home and put the pieces together.  Voila!

We had an old computer monitor leftover from college that is more ergonomically correct.  I told Nick he needs a bigger monitor, we’ll see what happens.  I’m looking forward to watching TV/Movies while I workout!
